Bonsmara - The Breed That Makes the Difference

The reason for developing the Bonsmara breed was to establish an efficient beef breed suitable for the warm bushveld and sub-tropical areas of South Africa. However, because of its adaptability, efficiency, beef- and carcass characteristics, the breed has gained much ground and today proliferates throughout South Africa.

Because of its virtues, Bonsmara is much sought after also in other parts of the world. Some of these countries include: Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria and Rwanda on the African continent, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, USA and Canada on the American continents and Australia.

Attributes

Over the years, the Bonsmara has distinguished itself as an ‘easy care’ breed with the following positive attributes: ·
  • Very well adapted to most climatic conditions
  • Early maturity
  • High fertility with short inter-calving periods
  • Low birth weights and therefore easy calving with high re-conception rates
  • Well developed udders with adequate milk to wean a strong calf
  • Calves every year and reconceives easily
  • Good growth ability
  • Advantageous feed conversion ratio
  • Excellent carcass and meat qualities
  • Pleasant temperament

Breed Standards

Some of the salient characteristics of the Bonsmara Society are: that animals are registered as Bonsmara only if acceptable performance test results are available, no competitive showing is allowed, a breeder must register a minimum of 20 breeding animals to qualify as a member (to allow proper selection pressure) and animals are inspected with the emphasis on functional efficiency and performance in the relevant environment.

Another procedure of importance is a basic register, which makes it possible for commercial breeders to become stud breeders through upgrading of their cattle. However, the first step in this program is the inspection and approval of the basic cows by qualified inspectors of the Society. This procedure allows contrive genes to enter into the Bonsmara system and to contribute to the already strong pool of genes of the Bonsmara.

Bonsmara Mission

While totally dependent on our Creator, the Bonsmara Cattle Breeders’ Society endeavors to be the leader in the beef cattle industry and to serve producers in South Africa and the rest of the world by: ·
  • Acting with credibility and integrity at all times.
  • Promoting scientific, biological and economic efficiency.
  • Promoting practical and efficient production methods.
  • Supplying superior, market related breeding material to the industry.
  • Supplying affordable, quality beef to all consumers.
Through these actions, the Bonsmara Cattle Breeders’ Society strives to make a positive contribution to the promotion of a balanced, environmentally friendly beef cattle industry, which will benefit the population as a whole and support its members in viable business undertakings.
